Overview

Everything changes after dark. The visual references you have built through S1 to S4 — colour, shadow, texture — disappear. Distance becomes harder to judge. The ridge looks different. Your vehicle feels different.

S5 introduces you to desert driving at night from a foundation of correct habit and discipline. Convoy management, lighting setup, communication, and spatial awareness under reduced visibility are the pillars of this session. The driving itself is calibrated to familiar terrain — the challenge here is not the dunes, it is the darkness.

Night driving is one of the most demanding and rewarding skills in the curriculum. S5 gives you the tools to approach it safely, systematically, and with confidence.

What you'll cover

• Vehicle lighting setup for night driving — what works, what doesn't, and how to configure your rig
• Convoy discipline after dark — spacing, communication protocols, and maintaining awareness of the group
• Spatial awareness under reduced visibility — reading the terrain with limited visual information
• Night-specific driving adjustments — speed, approach angle, and the patience that night driving demands
• Managing disorientation — the techniques to stay oriented and composed in unfamiliar conditions
• Driving on familiar terrain in darkness — applying established skills in a fundamentally different environment

Progression — Marshal sign-off required. Member must demonstrate night convoy discipline, correct lighting, and controlled driving in darkness.
